Andrea J. Wieland, Ph.D., M.B.A

Andrea consults through In The Zone as well as through her own firm, Winning Systems, Inc., a leadership coaching and organizational consultancy. Andrea specializes in designing strategic experiences that empower leaders and organizations to evolve and transform to the next level of competency, profitability, and sustainability. In addition to consultation, coaching, and original research in the world of competitive business, Andrea brings decades of expertise as a consultant and coach to athletes, leaders, coaches and teams in competitive sports. She has coached for leadership development, strategy and tactics as a sports coach of championship teams at the collegiate level.

A 1996 Olympian with extensive experience coaching peak performers, Andrea is armed with an arsenal of knowledge, experience and skills in assessment, design and delivery of customized seminars, and coaching of individuals and teams. Andrea has considerable experience working with intercollegiate athletic teams and coaches having consulted closely with over 75 sports teams, from the Big Ten, Atlantic 10, ACC, Atlantic 10 conferences to almost all the Ivy League schools.   Devoted to excellence and valuing the human spirit, her customized consultations are linked to an ethical and growth-producing process to improve the bottom line.  

Andrea has received rave reviews for her ability to facilitate group processes and for her informative and inspiring small-group and large-venue keynote presentations. Andrea has spoken frequently on topics related to individual and organizational performance including leadership, motivating engaged effort, and balancing demands of life and work for coaches, leaders, and elite athletes. Warm, engaging and informative, her expertise and own passion for excellence comes across to audiences, large and small, engaging them in considering and implementing changes that ultimately improve their performance and lives.

Andrea has consulted with leaders, teams, and team members of organizations ranging from small start-ups to mid-size companies across varying industries, including retail, hospitality (food service), and professional services.   Recent consultations include projects with Rockwell Collins (organizational strategy), Shive-Hattery (employee satisfaction) and The University of Iowa Athletic Department (evaluation of recent organizational merger).  

Keynote presentations in the world of business have included Berthel Fisher Financial Services, Communications Engineering Company, and Rotary clubs.   The original research for her dissertation, conducted with a $2B global, wireless technology business, has real world applicability regarding business leaders' diversity attitudes and team members' perceptions of transformational leadership and diversity climate. Andrea translates these real world results into results-driven consultations and seminars that address the costs of bias and to learn to peel bias away to view the world, others, and self through a broader lens.

Andrea earned her undergraduate degree at The University of Iowa. After rigorous training and competition as an Olympian, she returned to The University of Iowa to earn her graduate degrees in Business (M.B.A.) and a Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology (Ph.D.). She completed a pre-doctoral internship at the University of Texas at Austin. An active member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for the Advancement of Sport Psychology, and the Society of Consulting Psychology, Andrea has presented her original research to international audiences.
